This is a great article that has to do with DBT. DBT is a wonderful tool for helping us release the guilt, the shame, the anger, etc that comes with having a mental illness. Our own recovery begins and ends with us as well as the stigma. As Tenison (I may have misspelled that) once said, we are the captain of our ship. Let me explain the stigma aspect of this. We teach people how to treat us. If we are not willing to stand up for ourselves and share our experiences so others can learn, how can we ever expect them to “understand” and treat us better. We have to be willing to speak up not only to others on the street and in our lives, but also to our legislators to help them create better laws that benefit us. Yes, it is a two way street and others have to be willing to change their perceptions, but why can’t we help them? We need to empower ourselves. Okay, that is all for now. I’ll leave you with this one question: What is one thing you can do to remove the stigma?
